The Sabbath is an integral component to our Jewish Rituals. As the sun sets Friday evening, we are told that by lighting the Shabbat candles, we are ushering in literal but also figurative light into the world. According to our tradition, this custom dates back to our Matriarch Sarah, who lit two candles alongside her husband, Abraham. This watercolor painting is a powerful and personal expression of one of my favorite rituals as a Jewish woman. The moment when I cover my eyes to make the blessing is truly the most calming feeling of my entire week. I hope you can feel the tranquil energy that I felt while painting this.
